Ali Maimoun

Tribal, magical, dreamlike, steeped in African and Amazigh accents and ritual trance: Ali Maimoun’s art shows the whole world at once, physical and spiritual, with the frontality of an apparition.

Career

Born in 1956 at Archague, in the Ouarzazate region, Ali Maimoun was a mason by trade. His creative vocation first found its outlet in stone carving, then in thuya roots, from which he drew animal and human figures. He then turned to painting, taking his themes from daily life and mingling them with figures from African mythologies. He belongs to the singular artists of Essaouira, collected notably by Cérès Franco.

The totality of the world

As the writer Catherine Conil observed, Maimoun does not suggest an imaginary elsewhere: he shows, without hierarchy or apparent order, the invisible bonds that unite animal and human nature with sky and earth. There is no escape route, no vanishing point, and no need for one, since everything is there, free of tragic duality: a familiar strangeness in which one may even put on the devil’s clothes in order to live peacefully alongside him.

Landmarks

Stone carving, then sculpture in thuya roots

Painting of daily life and African mythologies

Cérès Franco Collection

Do you own a work by Ali Maimoun?

The gallery can examine it: request a valuation or consign it for sale at ARTWORKS in Casablanca.
