Amina Benbouchta

The imprint, the trace, what escapes the hurried eye: Amina Benbouchta paints and builds a world of links and tendrils that occupy space while still letting it breathe.

Career

Born in Casablanca in December 1963, Amina Benbouchta grew up in the Morocco of the “Years of Lead”. She graduated in anthropology and Middle Eastern studies from McGill University in Montreal in 1986, the year she began her career as an artist, then audited classes at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1988. In the 1990s she ran the fashion and culture magazine Les Alignés, and she co-founded Collectif 212, a group of artists and curators supporting emerging contemporary art in Morocco. She lives and works in Morocco.

The urgency of the gesture

Painting, photography and installation draw on her anthropological training: everyday objects, the human figure and her cultural surroundings become the material of a reflection on social questions, and above all on the politics of gender. Her recent paintings, in darker tones, have gained density and depth. Perfection of line and realist illusion give way to spontaneity, to the urgency of a gesture that searches and often finds.

Landmarks

1986 — Begins her career as an artist

1993 — Cairo Biennial

1997 — National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington; residency at the children’s hospital, Rabat

2004 — Residency, Musée de Marrakech

2008 — Residency, Castell de Dénia, Spain

2022 — “Dreaming a Dream”, with Ilias Selfati

Exhibitions in Morocco, Spain, France and Senegal

Do you own a work by Amina Benbouchta?

The gallery can examine it: request a valuation or consign it for sale at ARTWORKS in Casablanca.
