Antonio Fuentes

Often called "the Picasso of Tangier", Antonio Fuentes was born on 8 October 1905 at the Hotel Fuentes, his parents' hotel in the heart of the Petit Socco, and liked to describe himself as "a son of Tangier". Gifted for drawing from childhood, he worked as an illustrator for the newspaper Heraldo de Marruecos at thirteen.

He studied painting at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid (1920–1925), then at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where he drew caricatures of Spanish figures, many of them friends, such as Manuel de Falla and Andrés Segovia. His work absorbed the lessons of Cubism. From 1935 to 1940 he studied at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

After the war he returned to Tangier for good, painting again and again the Petit Socco, the Moroccan countryside, bullfights and nudes in a style entirely his own. Increasingly withdrawn from public life from the mid-1960s, he died in Tangier on 25 July 1995. A major retrospective in Madrid in 1997 confirmed his place among the great painters of the city, and his works are held in private collections in Spain, Morocco and Argentina.
