Fouad Bellamine

Born in 1950 in Fez, Fouad Bellamine long divided his life between Paris and Rabat. From the 1970s he took part in debates on the identity of art in Morocco, summing up his position in a famous phrase: “there is no Moroccan painting, only Moroccan painters”.

His abstract painting is built around architecture and light: arches, vaults, domes and thresholds appear and dissolve in broad fields of colour. The painter's gesture, ever present, turns each canvas into a space to walk through.

He is one of the major figures of contemporary Moroccan abstraction.

Do you own a work by Fouad Bellamine?

The gallery can examine it: request a valuation or consign it for sale at ARTWORKS in Casablanca.
