Mohammed Mrabet

Born in Tangier in 1936, Mohammed Mrabet barely attended school, yet became one of the first Moroccan painters of contemporary art. A prolific creator from the age of twenty, he saw his work travel around the world; it can be seen, among other places, at the Tangier American Legation Museum and in private collections.

His painting springs from a rich imagination marked by his Rif origins, in the mountain tribe of the Beni Ouriaghel, and by the influences of the Mediterranean and Africa. In complex interlacing forms appear tribal figures and aquatic creatures, centipedes and feathered serpents, echoing both his roots and the sea, a key element of his work. His first works, from the 1960s, explored geometric harmony and pure abstraction.

A born storyteller and one of the last witnesses of the Beat Generation in Tangier, he worked closely with Paul Bowles, with whom he produced many books, published in more than twenty-five languages. In 2021, at 85, he was still working tirelessly.
