Painter
Abdallah Fninou
Born in Casablanca in 1957, where he lives and works, Abdallah Fninou is an artist apart. He openly claims to be a disciple of the late Khlafa El Badaoui, whose memory and work he has vowed to keep alive, and was himself shaped by the great painters inspired by Morocco, from Bertuchi to Albert Pilot.
The artist
A child of Casablanca's old medina, he has long chosen the street, the freest and most spacious of exhibition spaces, to show his work: "My favourite exhibition has always been the street, in the open air." In the 1970s King Hassan II stopped before his canvases on a Casablanca avenue, and returned several times; Fninou later painted a grand portrait of the King. Years later, during a royal visit to the old medina, King Mohammed VI paused in turn before a monumental canvas the artist had dedicated to the bond between the King and his people.
Exhibiting since 1986, halfway between abstraction and figuration, he copies no one but himself. His favoured support is jute canvas, which enriches the reception of material and answers his allusive, evocative intentions.
