Abdelkebir Rabi'
Born in 1944 in Boulemane, Abdelkébir Rabi' trained at the École Normale in Fez to become a teacher and taught in secondary schools from 1967 to 1988. He taught himself art through specialist books, library archives and study periods in France. From 1988 he taught art and aesthetics at Hassan II University, before retiring in 2003 to devote himself entirely to painting. His first solo exhibition took place in Fez in 1968.
The artist
A founding figure of Moroccan symbolic painting, Rabi' works in charcoal, Indian ink and oil, sometimes borrowing from calligraphy a brief, sure stroke. His canvases, with their deep blacks, raw lines and play of shadow and light, carry a poetry of solitude. Mountains, austere landscapes and forests invite him to contemplation; for him, the best way to express light is to speak of shadow.
Each painting is born of a distinct meditation, with its own structure and rhythm, and questions freedom, stillness, the absolute and the uniqueness of the individual.
