The works

The artist

His early work was figurative, drawn from Moroccan folklore and rendered in transparent, vivid colours dominated by red and yellow: rituals, a hammam scene, a dancer in motion, a Gnaoui in trance. His figures emerge in nuance from a play of colour and diffuse light.

In 1990 he created Trans'Art, fusing painting with Gnawa music. Seeking pictorial equivalents to the repetitive build-up of the music towards trance, he gathered splashes of paint as the traces of a happening, between a hallucinated abstract expressionism and the memory of a musical tradition rooted in Africa. "Neither figurative nor abstract," he said, "my works are made of successive touches that relate everyday Moroccan life, all in movement: what I call expressive figuration."
