Painter
Abderrahim Iqbi
After studying visual arts in Marrakech, Abderrahim Iqbi held his first solo exhibitions in the early 1990s, then, after a long artistic silence, reappeared in Bologna, Italy, in 2003. Extremely reserved, he maintains a tumultuous relationship with his art that he rarely shows in public.
The artist
An unclassifiable artist who never anchors himself in a single style, he lets his imagination transfigure reality. Fearsome gazes, grotesque forms, distorted faces, lifeless silhouettes, tormented nudes and tragic scenes haunt his canvases, an intimate theatre whose characters dance a ballet of death. His constant questioning of the meaning of life and of the absurd speaks to every viewer.
Iqbi gives form to the formless in magnetic compositions, with a subtle balance of colour and material: carnival figures, wavering silhouettes searching for their bearings, in which we recognise ourselves.
