Painter
Abderrahmane Zenati
Born in Oujda on 14 July 1943, Abderrahmane Zenati is a Moroccan writer, poet and painter, known as the first artist from eastern Morocco to make his name internationally. Through his writing he stands apart by questioning many received ideas of the Arab world.
The artist
His childhood in the streets of Oujda was extremely hard. During a long hospital stay at the age of twelve, he began, simply to pass the time, to scribble drawings on any paper within reach, and little by little taught himself to read and then to write. He published his first book, Les cigognes reviendront-elles à Oujda ?, at the age of 51, and from then on the need to write never left him.
Drawing on his own life, in painting as in writing, he likes to turn his stories into fiction, creating tormented characters with tragic destinies.
