Painter
Ahmed Jarid
Born in Casablanca in 1954, Ahmed Jarid taught psycho-pedagogy and then philosophy before teaching the philosophy of art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca. In 1988 he became artistic adviser to the Minister of Culture and Communication, and later the minister's chief of staff, while continuing to exhibit in Morocco and abroad. A tireless promoter of Moroccan art and culture, he founded the Village of Artists' Studios in 1997 and the Grand National Exhibition of Visual Arts in 2004, and has contributed to numerous books on art.
The artist
He works mainly with plant and mineral pigments, marble powder, walnut stain, pomegranate bark, charcoal and earth, preferring natural materials to chemical products. Early in his career he was known for his mystical side, working on the great Arab Sufis such as Ibn Arabi and Niffari. "That was the period of black," he says. "What I do now is an exit towards light, as if I had to cross a tunnel to reach it." Yet light and clear colour do not necessarily mean serenity; they can also carry anxiety and deep reflection.
His pictorial construction rests above all on colour; sign and form become superfluous. As the critic Charbel Dagher wrote, his works offer "an uneasy image" that reaches completion only when the artist finally accepts it as his own. Each canvas is a journey undertaken with passion.
