Painter
El Imam Djimi
Born in Agadir, El Imam Djimi is an established painter and visual arts teacher with a long record of group and solo exhibitions. He has served as vice-president of the national bureau of the Moroccan Union of Visual Artists, secretary general of the Horizon Bleu visual arts association and founding member of the Federation of Visual Artists of the South.
The artist
His path has moved through several phases: an academic period, a personal research into material and light, a modern reinterpretation of Islamic art and arabesques (1994–2000), then a focus on Sahrawi heritage, its signs and colours found in the crafts of the Saharan regions. His latest research centres on rock engravings, a heritage of humanity he seeks to raise awareness about and protect, notably through the travelling exhibition project "Azalay" (camel caravan).
"With El Imam Djimi, art becomes conquest and challenge," writes the academic A. Ajbour. "He reveals visual unspoken things, figures from a distant past that have lost none of their brilliance." A child of the Sahara, he sees in the sand what others cannot, drawing from his roots his colours, his light and his material.
