Painter
Hamza Abderrahim
A lover of southern Morocco, Abderrahim Hamza is regarded as one of the country's notable calligraphers, sharing Arab artistic heritage with visitors from around the world in Marrakech, near the historic Menara gardens. Pen and ink always at hand, he has drawn the scenes he gathered while travelling through the Middle Atlas, capturing the joys, sorrows and thoughts of its people.
The artist
Self-taught, with his love of the land, its people and its places as his true teacher, he moves from figurative representation to pure abstraction. Calligraphy carries the social dimension of his chosen subjects, always expressed with aesthetic intent. A man of many talents, he also entered poetry through calligraphy, hand-writing poetic texts for Moroccan poets in the tradition known as al-arjouza.
His work has been shown at cultural events across Morocco and abroad, including in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, India, Japan, Serbia, France, Germany, Senegal, Gabon, Canada and Italy.
