Painter
Hossein Tallal
Hossein Tallal (1942–2022) lived and worked in Casablanca. He began painting in the 1950s and moved to Paris in the 1960s, where he frequented the artistic circles of the time, including the Moroccan painter Ahmed Cherkaoui. In 1965 he won first prize at the Salon d'Hiver in Marrakech, and his first solo exhibition was held in Paris two years later. He went on to exhibit in Spain, Denmark, the United States and Egypt.
The artist
Tallal began with circus figures and clowns, painted on canvas or wood in frontal compositions. His work then moved towards black-and-white depictions of children with truncated faces and bodies reduced to busts, and in the 1970s and 1980s to men and women with animal faces or silhouettes.
His best-known works are portraits of women, his "heads", set against monochrome backgrounds, each with a different headdress, a scarlet mouth and half-closed eyes. Their vibrating outlines and shades of blue, pink, yellow and green paradoxically heighten the sadness of the faces, leaving an impression of resigned melancholy.
