Painter
Houda Gueddari
Trained in dental prosthetics, with further training in art and computer graphics and a diploma in spatial design, Houda Gueddari chose several years ago to devote herself to painting, her lifelong passion. Since a much-noticed first exhibition in 2003, her work has taken new directions with each series.
The artist
Woman is at the heart of her approach: not the stereotyped figure of the Orientalist imagination, but a woman celebrated, beautiful and sovereign, airy and ethereal, moving through spaces of freedom between dance, choreography and sensuality. For Gueddari, art is first a dive into culture and its hidden layers, to reveal their meaning and strip them of a false sacredness.
Her recent series open onto an explosion of colour that adds mystery to what is shown, a hymn to a feminine strength born of serenity. Her work has been warmly received in Europe, particularly in Italy, where she received the Leonardo da Vinci Prize in Florence.
