Painter

Jean Pierre Favre

Jean-Pierre Favre fell under Morocco's spell on his first visit and settled in the country for good in 1985. For him, Morocco is a dazzlement and an inexhaustible source of subjects: not only its landscapes and light, but above all its people. His paintings evoke popular religious festivals, cityscapes, portraits of women, landscapes and sunsets.

The works

The artist

For the critic and collector Marc Auvray, his work is a timeless yet precise chronicle of an eternal Morocco, a land of shadow and light, gentleness and harshness, carried by the astonishing vitality of its people. Nicknamed "the most French of Moroccan painters", Favre belongs to a late 19th-century French tradition, between Impressionism and Fauvism.

He does not shut himself away in a studio: he makes quick sketches everywhere, in the street and in people's homes, remembers the colours, and recreates the scene from memory. "I hope to change the way people look," he says, "to make them see the crowd differently."
