Khalid El Bekay
Born in Casablanca in 1966, Khalid El Bekay graduated from the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan in 1990 and holds a degree in fine arts, printmaking section, from the University of Barcelona. His first exhibition was held in Barcelona in 1995, and in 1997 he was a finalist at the 30th Tarragona Painting Biennial. He lives and works between Barcelona and Casablanca.
The artist
His work brings together Moroccan cultural and geographical traditions with Western and Mediterranean references. The light of his paintings, unfolding in tones of red, yellow and blue, reflects his Mediterranean roots. Working with collages of grey or white paper on wood, torn by hand, he paints very simple objects that join East and West: a coffee cup, a tea glass, a teapot, a pear, an apple, reduced to the essential in an apparent sobriety.
"My work is a blend of Western and Eastern cultures," he says. "My paintings materialise my dialogue with the earth, an earth of a single colour that can bear fruits of very different colours and forms."
