Painter
Maria Kabbaj
Born in Casablanca in 1986, Maria Kabbaj is a Moroccan-Lebanese multidisciplinary artist. After a preparatory course in art in Paris, she graduated from Central Saint Martins in London, and spent a year in New York assisting the celebrated photographer Hiro in his studio.
The artist
She identifies with what the curator Nicolas Bourriaud calls "radicant" artists, who grow their roots as they move forward. Her protean, largely autobiographical work draws on Maghrebi, African, Middle Eastern and European references and is inspired above all by human relationships.
She began painting in 2007, at 21, as an extension of her inner world: her canvases balance intimate, spontaneous confession with carefully composed works in strong colours. The same thoughtful approach guides her photography, "a successful photograph is above all a well-considered idea", and more recently her sculpture.
