Maria Malard
Born in Morocco to Spanish parents, Anna Maria Malard lives and works in Casablanca. Her canvases carry the imprint of expressionism, with vivid, rhythmic colour, and translate states of mind and sensibility. For her, painting is a search for truth: "Painting is part of my life and shapes my balance. It is in the material that I express my strength."
The artist
Her work moves between impressions drawn from the picturesque reality of Morocco and freer improvisations built on images of jars, masks and marabouts, as well as sacred spaces and Chinese teapots. Fascinated by light, she hears colours like musical notes: "What matters to me is colour: I am a colourist. Then come the materials." Drawing on mystical texts, she sometimes introduces lines by Omar Khayyam and Rumi, in the spirit of Kandinsky, for whom colour is the keyboard and the soul the piano.
African masks, blue palms, the desert, domes, Chinese porcelain blue, Arabic calligraphy and gold run through her recent work. After forty years of painting, she oscillates between the semi-figurative and abstraction: "I am not far, but I have not arrived yet."
