Meriem Mezian
Meriem Mezian is one of the pioneers of Moroccan painting, often described as the country's first woman painter. Self-taught at first, she later graduated from the art school in Madrid. In her work, an instinctive, luminous palette sits alongside a learned eye trained by the study of the masters.
The artist
She was the first Moroccan woman painter to dare portray Moroccan femininity unveiled, body and face, in ancestral dress or wrapped in fabric that follows the contours of the figure, always with a sought-after poetic splendour. Dancers, women at home, Ahouach scenes, musicians draped in blue against burnished desert backgrounds with towers and kasbahs: her figuration is never neutral but carries emotion and meaning.
Born in the Mediterranean north and in love with the light of the south, she painted Moroccan culture from within, unlike the Orientalists. Harmony of vivid colour and a virtuoso sense of movement, especially in the depth of her blue fabrics, give her work its aesthetic power.
