Mohamed Douma: painting and light
Born in Casablanca in 1952, Mohamed Douma is a figurative painter whose subjects include Moroccan landscapes and everyday scenes. Medina streets, buildings, vegetation and human figures recur in his work. Light connects these subjects, defining space and giving each scene its rhythm.
His images are built from small repeated marks, sometimes crescent-shaped. Close up, these marks reveal the painted surface; from a distance, they come together as figures, forms and shifts in colour. This detailed approach gives his compositions their distinctive character.
