Mohamed Jaamati, Moroccan painter from Tétouan

Painter

Mohamed Jaamati

Born in Tétouan in 1961, Mohamed Jaamati has painted the north of Morocco for almost fifty years: a green door, a carved balcony, whitewashed rooftops at the end of the day. His canvases hold the quiet of the medina and the clarity of Mediterranean light.

The artist

The work

Every painting begins with architecture. Jaamati sets the structure in charcoal, then builds the scene in broad masses of colour, leaving the drawn lines and drips of paint visible. A façade stays recognisable, yet slowly dissolves into light and texture.

Beyond Tétouan, he paints the harbours, landscapes and spiritual places of Morocco, and cities from Marrakech to Cádiz, in oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media.

“My art is not only an image. Above all, it is visual poetry.”Mohamed Jaamati
