Painter
Mustapha Asmah
A self-taught artist from Essaouira, Mustapha Asmah fills his compositions with exhilarating colour, singular human and animal forms, references to forgotten myths and Afro-Amazigh esoteric rites, phantasmagoria and playful movement. His work proudly asserts his roots in Essaouira and celebrates a social and traditional imagination steeped in spirituality.
The artist
Like many artists of the "City of the Trade Winds", he has his studio in the town's scrap-metal souk, where he spends much of his time. Working freely with colour and a range of materials across painting and sculpture, he favours simple, sharp forms that have become his signature.
Widely praised by critics, his work has won prizes in the art brut category in Morocco and abroad, particularly in Europe, where he has exhibited several times.
