About Mustapha Snoussi
Mustapha Snoussi has built his work around the Arabic letter for some forty years, treating it as a painter rather than a calligrapher. His compositions are dense and interlaced, with forms and letters layered so closely that they fill the whole surface. He also works in sculpture, giving the letter a third dimension, including in ice, snow and wood.
As a young man he learned photo retouching and colouring with the painter and calligrapher Mohammed Barrada, then worked as an architectural technician in Casablanca before studying urban planning and fine arts in Paris. He held his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1981, lived and exhibited in the United States for about twenty years, and returned to Morocco in 2010. He has received several awards in Europe and the United States.
