About Nafiaa Amthqal
A native of Essaouira, Nafiaa Amthqal discovered art through the first fine arts sections opened at the Essaouira secondary school in the 1980s. Early on he was supported by the collector and gallerist Frédéric Damgaard, and worked in the style of the Essaouira School, mixing naive symbols and calligraphy.
He later broke with this style. Through experiments with material and colour, large canvases emerged populated by enigmatic faces and silent, dreamlike figures. With more than thirty years of practice, his work is collected in Morocco and by art lovers visiting Essaouira.
