Painter
Najeb Zoubir
Born in El Jadida in 1954, Najeb Zoubir studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, earning a diploma in graphic arts. His first solo exhibition took place in El Jadida in 1984. He lives and works in El Jadida.
The artist
Without being anecdotal, his works whisper reveries and emotions without dwelling on them heavily. From the window of his studio set in the ramparts of the Portuguese city, Zoubir "feels he is at the gates of eternity": he loses himself in the Ocean, his gaze moving from the Saint-Antoine bastion to the port, the beach and the forest stretching towards Azemmour.
His painting has a before and an after. Before moving into this studio, he painted light, airy canvases filled with nostalgia for the childhood of art. Since then he has "oceanised" his palette around a swirling blue, keeping bright touches of orange and yellow from his earlier work. This turning point also brought a very simple form, often a glass, that serves as the backbone of each composition.
