The work of Rabie El Mesnani
In the works presented here, a face, a line or a patch of colour becomes the starting point for a personal visual world. Drawn contours meet layered paint; recognisable forms sit alongside freer passages of colour. The selection includes acrylic and mixed-media paintings on canvas.
Rather than reading the image at a glance, look closely at its surface: the contrast between a dark outline and a bright colour, the marks left visible, and the balance between the figure and its surroundings.
The artist
A self-taught artist from Asilah, also spelled Assilah, El Mesnani grew up in a family of artists. His grandfather's paintings and his father's creative practice formed part of his early surroundings. He developed his own pictorial language within this family tradition, alongside a practice in sculpture.
