Painter
Rachid Zizi
Born in Beni Mellal in 1971, Rachid Zizi graduated from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca in 1993 and lives and works in Marrakech. Since 1996 he has been part of the gestural movement, in which the movement of the gesture becomes the very essence of the work.
The artist
His recent work rests on spontaneity and speed, energising the canvas in an informal organisation close to abstract painting. Each stroke is a polyphonic note building lines of force that draw the eye through a labyrinth of gestures into inner spaces. Marked by the freedom of neo-figurative painting, his mixed palette carries an atmosphere close to expressionism.
After figurative and calligraphic paintings, Zizi has turned towards the spontaneous path of abstraction, halfway between poetry and painting, bringing out the cosmic sense of coloured harmonies.
