About Saâd Ben Cheffaj
Born in Tétouan in 1939, Saâd Ben Cheffaj is one of the founding figures of modern Moroccan painting and among the first Moroccans to receive an academic training in art. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville from 1957, attended art history courses at the École du Louvre in Paris, and obtained his teaching diploma from the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville in 1962. In 1965 he returned to Morocco to teach art history, drawing and painting at the Tétouan School of Fine Arts.
Since his first exhibition in 1956, his work has moved through figuration, expressionism, neo-realism and abstraction, towards a dense, earthy painting with dark tones. Mediterranean culture and the colour blue run through his work. His paintings are held in collections including the Fondation Cartier and the Barjeel Art Foundation. He lives and works in Tétouan.
