Painter
Saïd Qodaid
Born in 1965, Saïd Qodaïd graduated in graphic art from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan in 1990. He rejects the label of "Orientalist painter" and its picturesque exoticism: his work is not aimed at a Western market but at the culture buried in the soul of every Moroccan, which he seeks to revive.
The artist
His compositions feel alive because they keep every stage visible, fragments of the sketch and broad areas of colour laid down quickly. The freedom he takes with the idea of completion preserves a sense of play, childhood and spontaneity, in a raw, nervous, broken style.
Starting from photography and figuration, his work moves towards the abstraction of forms through a cubist approach. Synthesising the values of ancestral Morocco, his paintings travel through time and set up a continuous dialogue between their figures and the viewer, expressing his relationship to light, to people and to the world.
