Tibari Kantour
Born in Casablanca in 1954, Tibari Kantour lives and works in Sidi Maâchou. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca, then at the Royal Academies of Fine Arts in Liège and Brussels and the Ixelles printmaking school, and was artist in residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris from 1995 to 1998.
The artist
Widely regarded as the master of handmade paper in Moroccan art, he was the first to bring the craft of papermaking, with its vat and press, into contemporary creation. For him paper is not a mere support but a living material with unsuspected aesthetic potential. He mounts silk paper onto canvas, tearing it each time he lays it down to create massive, rock-like forms, and colours it with printmaking inks to obtain transparency, light and an almost tangible materiality, dominated by ochres and punctuated by black.
The writer Edmond Amran El Maleh saw in his work "one of the great moments in the history of Moroccan painting". He has created artist's books with the poets Mohamed Bennis and Mohamed El Achaari, and his works are held in public collections including those of the Moroccan Ministry of Culture and the World Bank in Washington.
