Painter
Youssef Ait Tazarin
Born in 1977 in the province of Zagora, Youssef Ait Tazarin moved to Essaouira at fourteen, when he began to paint, and has exhibited since 1993, first in his home town and then across Morocco. The youngest of the Tazarin brothers, he was later followed onto the artistic path by his brother Hamou.
The artist
He has developed a highly distinctive, fantastical world inspired by the rock paintings of the Zagora region: prehistoric, forgotten creatures that seem reborn on his canvases, rendered in an inimitable pointillism that carries ancestral knowledge across ages and continents.
The critic Olivier Rachet points to his "bestiary of hybrid creatures" as emblematic of the Essaouira artists, in whose world nature reigns supreme. For Abderrahman Benhamza, his technique is "a total mystery": "an inimitable pointillism, the meticulousness of an ascetic projected in spirit on an endless ritual journey of initiation."
