Painter
Youssef Douieb
A self-taught artist, Youssef Douieb has painted since 1994 and has devoted himself entirely to painting for many years. He has held numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his works are in many private collections.
The artist
Favouring monochrome, Indian ink and acrylic, techniques refined over long years, he describes his work as a form of "naive abstraction", a nod both to the abstract expressionism of Franz Kline, whom he likes to cite, and to his self-taught practice. Spontaneous as it is, his gesture remains attentive to detail. As the critic Olivier Rachet notes, the pigmented ink he uses lets him "explore the mystery of colour and reveal a transparency resistant to any impasto": he paints passage, or sketches its traces.
For the critic Sylvain Huard, his painting is "an art of concord, a quest for unity rooted in the intimate".
