About Zakaria Ramhani
Born in 1983 in Tangier, Zakaria Ramhani discovered painting as a child in his father's studio. He trained as an art teacher before devoting himself entirely to his own work.
Since 2006 he has developed a series of portraits built from dense networks of Arabic and Latin letters, in which writing becomes a painterly gesture rather than text. His work has been shown at the British Museum's Word Into Art exhibition, the Dak'Art and Cairo biennales, the Institut du monde arabe in Paris and the Barbican Centre in London. He lives and works between Tangier and Montreal.
