Painter
Abdelaziz Koutbane
Born in Beni Mellal in 1972, Abdelaziz Koutbane lives and works in Italy. Having exhibited in Morocco and abroad, he is regarded as one of the most promising painters of his generation.
The artist
After a figurative period depicting Moroccan traditions through small juxtaposed touches of shimmering colour, he turned to a spontaneous, poetic expressionism. His painting pushes line and colour to their limits through a dreamlike vision that seems to reach beyond the edge of the canvas: free gesture, lively composition, chromatic tension between figures and space.
The common thread of his recent work is the instantaneous, spontaneous release of paint, with every layer and stain left visible. Pure colours spring forth or blend in harmony, and each canvas reads like a poem, where feeling and intellect come together in a rhythmic dance of forms.
