The artist
Career
Born in Meknes in 1965, Abdelhak Arzima has lived in Salé since 1981, whose walls, gates, ramparts and Bouregreg valley have long inspired him. Long stays in Spain, Brussels, Tetouan and Casablanca, in contact with established painters, shaped his practice. In Valencia he joined an association of abstract painters while remaining faithful to the portrait, and trained in picture restoration with a company specialising in old works.
Relief and light
Landscape, portrait and fantasia are his favourite themes, always rooted in Moroccan heritage. In his portraits of Moroccan faces he works with a limited palette, because what matters to him is relief and light; he prepares his canvases by hand, in the traditional way, and builds up matter so that the public can feel the surface. For Arzima, mastering the rules of each school is the foundation of any artistic path.
