Mohamed Toumi
Born in Casablanca to a family from Taroudant, Mohamed Toumi trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca and emerged in the 1970s as a leading figure of the second generation of Moroccan painters, following pioneers such as Cherkaoui, Gharbaoui, El Yaacoubi, Belkahia and Melehi. After his studies he settled in Rabat, where he became one of the few painters of his time to win recognition from critics and collectors.
The artist
His early work drew on traditional subjects: horses, festivals and moussems. It then evolved into a refined blend of expressionist and abstract accents with the gentler forms of the social portrait, carried by a highly personal gesture. Toumi rejects strict labels: in his canvases, he says, you find both the figurative and the abstract.
For him, being an artist is not simply a matter of colouring a canvas, but a constant state of the soul and the senses, open to the wonder and the pathos of life. Horses and figures crowd his paintings, swept along by colour and movement.

Yes: within 48 hours in Casablanca and Rabat, three to four days elsewhere in Morocco; international shipping is quoted on request. Payment is made on delivery, by bank transfer or by cheque.
