Abdelkrim Ouazzani
Born in Tetouan in 1954, Abdelkrim Ouazzani is a draughtsman, painter and sculptor who lives and works in Tetouan, where he has directed the Institut National des Beaux-Arts. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan, then from 1975 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since 1995 he has been a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Granada, and in 1999 France made him a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
The artist
At first glance his works seem simple and playful, verging on naivety, yet they hold real depth. The wheel and the circle, omnipresent in his sculpture, sum up his approach: "The circle is above all the symbol of the earth, continuity, the cycle of life, the journey," he says. "My work often represents a living being searching for the future, a better planet, a more colourful world."
Metal and plaster are wrapped in canvas painted in acrylic, forming coloured drawings in three dimensions: polychrome sculptures whose poetry recalls the fragility of childhood. Concerned with ecology for decades, he uses animals and plants to create "a kind of visual poetry": "All these animals, plants and objects represent a part of the human being, and often that human being is me."
