Abdellah Dibaji
Born in 1952 in Azemmour, Abdellah Dibaji studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tetouan from 1976, then at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège from 1979. He worked first as a teacher and then as an inspector of art education. He has held solo exhibitions since 1981 in Morocco, Germany, France and the United States, and in 1998 completed a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He lives and works in El Jadida.
The artist
His painting is above all urban: doors, windows, streets, walls and the ever-present crowd. Strong, dense colours, touches sometimes vivid and sometimes softened but always delicate, and a supporting graphic structure keep each canvas free of any picturesque cliché. Dibaji begins by testing his vision with a layer of light and dark blue-grey, then blurs the boundaries between colours to create a profusion of fixed, absorbent layers.
