Abdellah Hariri
Born in Casablanca in 1949, Abdellah El Hariri is one of the leading figures of Moroccan painting, regarded by critics as one of the founders of modern painting in Morocco. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Casablanca from 1966 to 1969, at the European Institute of Design in Rome from 1973, and in 1980 completed a printmaking course in Łódź, Poland. A painter and graphic artist, he first exhibited in 1973 in Casablanca, where he lives and works, and has since shown his work across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia.
The artist
In 2010 he was received by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who decorated him in recognition of his artistic career; several of his canvases belong to the royal collection.
For El Hariri, painting is a search for a pure state where stain, stroke and line trace the fundamentals of the art. Refusing barriers between schools, he has moved from figuration to abstraction; both lyrical and geometric, his painting is dominated by abstraction while keeping elements of the outside world. The painter Ilham Omari Laraki describes it as "a symphonic concerto of colour", where the letter blossoms in a space rich in material and opacity.
