Painter
Abdelmajid Zouitina
Born in Casablanca in 1952, Abdelmajid Zouitina is regarded as one of the most accomplished Moroccan painters of his generation. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1971 to 1975 and held his first exhibition in 1987. Until 1992 his work belonged to the landscape abstraction of the School of Paris, in the line of Nicolas de Staël, Tal-Coat and Ubac.
The artist
Sensing that this vein risked repetition, he turned to analytical Cubism, finding in it new visual possibilities and greater freedom in handling space. As the critic Abderrahman Benhamza observes, his approach subjects three-dimensional form to a pictorial geometry in which abstraction never abandons representation, keeping the object's density while submitting it to a rigorous, meticulous "architecturing".
Colour, monochrome or polychrome, is laid in broad fields and small adjoining fragments, the tones vibrating in a tight, balanced play of light and shadow, where his favourite olive greens and reds shine. "My painting is a perpetual surpassing of the self through colour and line," he says. "The reality that inspires me passes through the imagination, where my unconscious surfaces as visions."
