Painter
Abdelmalek Berhiss
Chimerical creatures and a dreamlike bestiary that seem to rise slowly from distant civilisations: Abdelmalek Berhiss paints with a pared-down, precise touch, close to pointillism.
The artist
Career
Born in 1971 in a village near Essaouira, into a working-class family, Abdelmalek Berhiss began painting very young and joined the Frédéric Damgaard gallery at nineteen. Self-taught, he works in painting and sculpture. His work is held in the Cérès Franco collection and has been shown in Morocco and in Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and France.
A musical imagination
Soft, rounded lines and meticulous detail serve an unbridled, almost musical imagination, rooted in ancestral legends and in the Moroccan cultural origins of the painter. Each canvas unfolds a phantasmagorical world that slowly casts its spell on the viewer.
