Fatna Gbouri
Fatna Gbouri was born in 1924 in Tnine Gharbia, a small village in the province of Safi. Like the other women of her village, she worked the land and wove carpets. After the death of her husband, she began painting in 1984, at the age of 59, encouraged by her son Ahmed Mjidaoui, himself a painter and art teacher.
The artist
With no formal training, she drew on memory to paint scenes of traditional Moroccan life: bright colours, signs and motifs, and narrative sequences full of vivid characters. Her spontaneous, naive style earned her the nickname "the memory of Safi". She also worked in tapestry and ceramics.
A major figure of Moroccan naive art, she exhibited in Morocco and abroad, including France, Germany, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates. She died in January 2012, aged 88, leaving a body of work that is now part of Morocco's cultural heritage.
