The artist
Career
Born in Salé in 1963, where he lives and works, Abdelmoumen El Farouj grew up in a family of painters: his mother Fatima Hassan El Farouj and his father Hassan El Farouj guided and supported him, as did his wife, daughter of the painter Mohammed Ben Allal. He holds a degree in economics and has exhibited in Morocco and abroad.
A family heritage
His style combines that of his father and, even more, that of his mother, whose first solo exhibition, at the Alliance française in Rabat in 1974, he still remembers. Simple and full of colour, his canvases celebrate the great moments of celebration and ritual; behind their joy, he says, each painting also keeps a secret, the trace of the hardships of his youth.
