Painter
Abderrahim Trifis
Abderrahim Trifis was born in 1974 in Sidi Mokhtar, between Essaouira and Marrakech, into a family of the Oulad Bou Sbaâ, pastoral people from the Sahara known for their nomadic carpet motifs. He left school after primary education and, from 1990, ran a small barber's shop in the middle of the souk, painting whenever he could.
The artist
A self-taught painter of legends
One of his earliest paintings, from 1996, was inspired by the popular prints of saints and prophets sold by travelling vendors at souks and moussems. Legends, horsemen and above all the "bride of the water", a mermaid figure that haunts his work, became his favourite subjects. He paints in oil on skin, in a naive, densely detailed style where people, animals and spirits blend into one another.
From the souk to the studio
His work was first shown in Essaouira in the mid-2000s, alongside the region's other self-taught painters. In 2008 he gave up barbering to devote himself entirely to painting.
