Painter
Abderrahman Meliani
Born in Marrakech in 1944, Abderrahman Meliani lives and works in Rabat. His work escapes any hasty classification into a movement, school or passing trend. A painter, he has also explored sculpture, printmaking, installation and assemblage throughout his long career, always searching for materials and media to serve his aims, and sometimes his surrealist fancies, turning everyday objects from their purpose and transfiguring the banal.
The artist
Painting nonetheless remains the sap that nourishes the whole. His large formats reveal the creative process in its raw state: the luminous white of the canvas sets off the frenzy of stains and the rhythm of drips and splashes, while greys and ochres affirm a discreet musicality in concert with the vivacity of the gesture and the layers of covering and transparency. The freedom of the line and the rigour of the incisive sign, minimal, horizontal, arc or helix, bring order to chaos and crystallise the moment.
He has exhibited in Morocco since 1972, as well as in Germany.
