Painter
Afif Bennani
Landscapes that pass as if seen from the window of a fast train, kasbahs of the south painted with a mastered improvisation: Afif Bennani belongs to the great figurative tradition, heir to Delacroix and Van Gogh.
The artist
Career
Self-taught, Afif Bennani has painted since childhood; his practice developed through the teaching of the late French artist Edmond Vales, who passed on professional techniques to him. A life member of the French Fédération nationale de la culture, which had already given him a merit prize for his work on cultural heritage, he received the European Medal for the Visual Arts for “La kasbah de Timzouline”, a historic site in the Dades region, shown at the Salon international de prestige “Les Regards 2004” in Saint-Tropez. He has also written a book on his path as an artist and his reflections on painting.
A mastered improvisation
For the art historian Sophie Valcauda, each of his paintings gives the sensation of a vision glimpsed through the window of a fast train: barely has one exclaimed at its beauty than the landscape vanishes, leaving admiration behind. The critic Harry Kampienne sees in it a true mastery of the past masters and the secret of controlled improvisation. For Bennani, painting is not only a means of expression but a way of living and thinking, guided by perseverance, patience and silence.
