Painter
Ahmed Balili
Crowds in the souks, gatherings at moussems and weddings: Ahmed Balili observes the daily life of Marrakech and paints it again and again, with a modern figuration of controlled geometry and pure colour.
The artist
Career
Born in 1955, Ahmed Balili lives and works in Marrakech. Like many self-taught painters, he came to painting out of necessity rather than vocation, as if he had urgently to express through line, contour and colour what his eye gathered day after day in his city and its surroundings.
Juxtaposition and harmony
His compositions proceed by juxtaposition and concentration, massing and harmonisation. Human and animal figures intertwine yet remain distinct within the order of the image. The rigour of this construction owes nothing to academies, and his painting holds its own beside that of fine-arts graduates.
