Painter
Amine Demnati
Crouching beggars, shoeshine boys, walled cities ringed with black, then figures barely suggested on empty esplanades: in a life cut short at twenty-nine, Amine Demnati left one of the most refined bodies of work in Moroccan modern painting.
The artist
Career
Born in Marrakech on 15 January 1942, Mohamed Amine Demnati went to school in Casablanca, where he joined the applied arts section of the Mers Sultan collège, then continued at the École des arts appliqués in Paris, holding his first exhibition there in 1961. Back in Morocco, he exhibited in Rabat, Marrakech and Casablanca, took part in the debates on the state of the arts and helped found one of the first associations of Moroccan visual artists. He died in Rabat in 1971.
Harmony and humour
From an early figuration, Demnati moved towards suggestion: refined browns, ochres and blacks, emptied lanes, figures evoked in filigree. The body and its garment, movement and balance, and a particular tenderness for women run through his work, along with a humour visible in his series of golfers in traditional dress or his “butterflies”, servants turned into whirling dervishes. He worked the same theme in oil, lithography, tapestry, zellige and stained glass, where he found the transparency of light.
