Painter
Asmae Rochdi
A joyful celebration of colour, form and light, the work of Marrakech-born painter Asmae Rochdi is the fruit of many years of work and research. Her intimate figurative world is made of fleeting dreams and intangible poetry, built with a quick, incisive and precise touch. She has exhibited in Morocco and abroad, notably in Switzerland.
The artist
Before returning to painting, her first love since childhood, she spent many years as a flight attendant, travelling across sub-Saharan Africa and encountering the humility and diverse cultural and spiritual sensibilities of its peoples. That experience became her inspiration: the condition of African women lies at the heart of her work. Through portraits of Black beauty in its raw state, she rethinks questions of feminism and identity. "On the bodies of African women, I try to inscribe propositions that are both personal and collective, true to their lived experience," she says.
"Painting is first of all a pleasure that lets me share my vision, bring the invisible into the visible," she adds. "The canvas is built without any preconceived idea. There is no sketch or plan; it comes from the inspiration of the moment."
